Many times, we’re asked to present using someone else’s platform. Maybe you’re a Zoom expert who needs to use Microsoft Teams for the first time. Or maybe GoToWebinar’s your jam, but your client uses BlueJeans. How do you get up to speed with a new platform before showtime? Tech checks, that’s how.
Tech check? What do I need it for?
In early September, I was invited to speak at a conference. The organizers offered me a chance at a technical runthrough of my talk so that I could get familiar with the platform. Since they told me they used Zoom, I figured the tech check would go quickly because I am something of a *ahem* Zoom expert. Although I really didn’t think I need one, I scheduled a tech check for three days before my session. And it’s a good thing I did!
A problem reveals itself
During the tech check, I learned that they would be broadcasting my Zoom presentation through a different platform. That meant none of the interactivity I baked into the presentation was going to work. So we scheduled a second tech check so I could become familiar with their platform. I learned how I needed to modify my presentation and was good to go.
Another curveball
Or at least I was until the night before my session, when I was told that based on their experience with day 1 of the conference, they wanted me to switch to yet another platform. So tech check #3 was scheduled for just a few hours before go time.
Success!
During the multiple tech checks, even as I was becoming increasingly nervous, the wonderful behind-the-scenes conference engineers were very happy to help me become more comfortable with the tools. We worked to figure out a presentation solution that was even better than what I’d originally planned.
Just think of how differently things would’ve turned out if I hadn’t scheduled that first tech check!
Always say “yes” to tech checks
The next time you’re presenting using someone else’s platform, take advantage of any technical runthroughs they offer. And if they don’t offer, ask for one. Work out any problems ahead of time so you can shine during your presentation! After all, everyone wants you to succeed: your hosts, the meeting engineers, the audience, and you. Increase your chances of a great presentation by always saying “yes” to tech checks!
