If you want to show a radical data imbalance, sometimes it’s better to illustrate the difference than to use a graph. Here’s one way to do it.
Before
This slide is meant to illustrate the imbalance between perceived and actual threats. People think that VM escape, which essentially means hacking or malicious coding, is a bigger security threat. The reality is that operational security threats such as cracking weak passwords, installing pirate card readers, and compromising employees are the bigger risk.
Sometimes graphs are great at illustrating discrepancies like this. However in this case, the designer of this slide told me that he just made up numbers in order to make the graph look scary. I thought there could be a better way of showing the perception versus reality of security threats more effectively.
After
In the redesigned slides, I removed the graph in favor of showing photos and interesting graphics to illustrate the problem.
